Every Child Deserves to See Themselves in a Story

Approximately 1 in 1,000 babies are born with a brachial plexus injury each year. Yet children with limb differences and disabilities are still rarely represented as the main characters in picture books.

Britney Has a Brachial Plexus was created to help close that gap: one child, one classroom, and one conversation at a time.

Book 1 of the "I'm Handy; No cap" series

Meet Britney

Britney was born with a brachial plexus injury, affecting the nerves that connect her neck to her arm. Her right arm moves differently from other children's arms, but that doesn't stop her from figuring things out in her own way.

From taking her first steps to ballet class, monkey bars, and picture day, Britney discovers that being different doesn't mean being less. She's capable, determined, and completely herself.

Written as a gentle, richly illustrated read-aloud for ages 4–8, the story celebrates resilience, self-acceptance, kindness, and belonging.

A Story Born From Lived Experience

Clarissa Davis-Lindsey was born with the same injury Britney has. Growing up, she never found herself represented in a picture book, so she decided to write the story she needed as a child.

Now, Britney Has a Brachial Plexus gives young readers an opportunity to see disability through a different lens: one centered on possibility, purpose, confidence, and belonging.

A Story Every Child — and Every Heart — Needs to Hear

Britney Has a Brachial Plexus is so much more than a children’s book. It is a beautiful, heartfelt reminder that what makes us different does not make us less — it can be the very thing that makes us extraordinary.

From the very beginning, Britney’s story draws you in with courage, resilience, kindness, and an unwavering determination to live fully. What touched me most was watching how hard Britney worked, how determined she remained, and how she continued to lead with kindness throughout her life. She never allowed what made her different to become a reason to stop dreaming. Instead, she embraced who she was and went after everything her heart desired.

My favorite part of Britney’s story is her dream of a future where fairness would reign, a future where she could help those in need and ease the pain of others. That dream reveals something so beautiful about her character: Britney didn’t just want to overcome challenges for herself. She wanted her life to make a difference for others.

And isn’t that the kind of story we want our children to hear?

In a world where children can sometimes feel different, left out, or limited by what others see in them, Britney Has a Brachial Plexus offers a powerful message of hope: You are not your limitations. You are uniquely and wonderfully made. Your differences do not diminish your worth, they are part of the beautiful story God is writing through your life.

I love that this book invites children and families to see differences through a different lens — not as something to hide or overcome, but as something to embrace. It encourages us to look beyond what we see on the outside and discover the courage, gifts, dreams, and purpose within each person.

We are all fearfully and wonderfully made, and sometimes the very thing we think makes us different is the very thing God will use most.

This is a book to read, treasure, talk about, and share. Give it to a child who needs encouragement. Share it with a family learning to embrace their own unique journey. Read it in a classroom and start a conversation about inclusion, kindness, courage, and compassion.

Most of all, let Britney’s story remind you that a life filled with challenges can still be a life filled with possibility, purpose, and joy.

Get this book. Let Britney inspire you. Then share her story with someone who needs to be reminded just how wonderfully they are made.
